Scope and content: Muster rolls and payrolls identify the individual members of a military unit, for a specific day or time period, for the purposes of allotting pay. At a minimum, each roll will identify the military unit, the date the roll was recorded, the names and ranks of those members present, and the amount of pay due to each. Many rolls describe additional information such as age, where enlisted, commissioned, promoted, wounded, killed, and/or discharged. This unit contains over 78 cubic feet of muster roll and payroll documents, organized by roughly 200 discrete control numbers (e.g., control #07237 identifies microfilm reel AR136 of WWI Kansas Selective Service Inductees, 1917-1918) which correlate to the AGO finding aid's control numbers for record sets. The bulk of the materials are from the Civil War era and continue through the end of World War I to 1918. A single muster roll folder, that of Kansas State Guard's 1st Infantry Regiment, 2nd Battalion, Topeka Company, contains muster rolls for that unit's 1941 mustering in and 1947 mustering out counts as the only World War II muster rolls available in this series.
