Governor's Commission on Children and Families Files

Restrictions: Per KSA 75-104, as of 1991, records of former governors who are still alive are closed until their deaths, unless the governor orders that the records be opened. Certain records may still remain closed due to falling under KSA 45-221, the Open Records Act, or under other such statutes that generally or specifically affect the openness of public records. Scope and content: The Governor's Commission on Children and Families was established under executive order 88-109 in order to identify public issues most critical to families and children; assess status of most vulnerable among these populations; find policy choices available and analyze those choices; keep public informed and invite their comments; and make recommendations to the governor. The commission included the Secretary of Health & Environment, the Secretary of Human Resources, and the Secretary of Social and Rehabilitation Services as ex officio members.

Records from this commission include meeting minutes, memoranda and correspondence, studies and reports and other reference material, travel vouchers, public relations and other publications and materials from support and advocacy groups, subject files, press releases, draft recommendations from various committees within the commission, etc. The commission was interested in the courts, child care, mental health, physical health (including AIDS), and other topics affecting families and children.
