Summary: Simon Gill, an African-American farmer from Jetmore, Kansas, submitted these applications for relief from 1933 to 1936. The applications include information about his income, property values, unpaid debts, and his family (he was unmarried but was caring for his sister?s five children). Attached to the application are work relief financial data cards, which includes the estimated weekly needs of the family, including the cost of food, fuel, clothing, medical care, and other bills. On the back of this work relief card is a tally of his work and the amount earned. He applied for relief again in 1934 and was granted more work relief as well as direct relief in the form of pork, rice, potatoes, and other staple foodstuffs.
