Summary: This photograph shows William Comstock, an army scout who served at Fort Wallace, Kansas. He was General Phil Sheridan and General George Armstrong Custer?s favorite scout. Because of his knowledge of Native American languages, he often acted as an interpreter. Comstock was the grandnephew of author James Fenimore Cooper and was greatly influenced by characters in Cooper?s books, which prompted him to head west at an early age. Comstock died in 1868 at the age of 26.
