Records from Hodgeman County

Abstract: This collection consists of records from the county's Extension Office (food production plan, reports, office files, and correspondence), Superintendent of Public Schools (school registers, library accounts, surveys, reports, and meeting minutes), Social Welfare Office (financial records), Poor Commissioner (WPA and emergency relief), Health Department (student medical records), and School Board (warrant and claims registers). Also included is an 1895 warranty deed from county seat Jetmore, Kansas, from the Union Pacific Railway Company.

Administrative History: Hodgeman County, located in southwest Kansas, was created in 1868 and its boundaries defined in 1879. It is named in honor of Amos Hodgman, Captain of Company H, Seventh Kansas Cavalry, who died on October 16, 1863, near Oxford, Mississippi, of wounds received in an action at Wyatt, Mississippi, on October 10,1863. The name should be spelled Hodgman without the "e," as spelled in the original statute of 1868 that created the county, but the statute that defined its boundaries in 1873 inserted the "e." The county’s population was estimated to be 2,071 in 2006. Its county seat and most populous city is Jetmore. Townships include Benton, Center, Hallet, Marena, North Roscoe, Sawlog, South Roscoe, Sterling, and Valley.
