Scope and Content

Scope and content:

This is a memoir of Charles H. Dewey's life to 1943 and postscripts dated 1944 and 1976. Included are recollections of his life on the farm near Piedmont, Kan.; studies at the Kansas State Normal School at Emporia, now Emporia State University in Kansas; work as a teacher and school superintendent, the latter at Randolph and Grenola, Kan.; college and medical school at the University of Kansas in Lawrence and Kansas City; medical practice in Buffalo and Elk City, Kansas, during the Great Depression; and military service as a physician at Civilian Conservation Corps camps in Kansas, Missouri, and the western United States and a prisoner of war camp at Camp Joseph T. Robinson in North Little Rock, Arkansas. The memoirs also describe farm life and the agricultural economy in the late 1880s and the political debate over the Spanish-American War.

The memoirs cover all aspects of Dewey's life from birth to adulthood. His varied experiences and accomplishments have been of distinct public appeal and interest, and such personal histories are normally so interwoven with the threads of life's relationships as to be only not only an individual chronicle but also a picture of social and political life of the times. The memoir is divided into forty-three chapters and includes photograph images.
