Biography

Biog. Sketch (Full): John A. Crabb was born 4 June 1869, the son of Thomas and Wealth Ann Shafer Crabb, in Brown County, Illinois. His family came to Kansas when he was thirteen years old, and they settled in Smith County. In 1889 Crabb married Cora Jane Brown. For a few years he taught at country schools and farmed, attending the Teachers' Institute each summer. He also served as county clerk for Smith County for two terms.

Crabb formed an interest in the medical profession because of western Kansas Doctors John and Henry Dykes. He moved his wife and three children Ray, Herbert, and Emma to Topeka, Kansas, in order to attend the Kansas Medical College there, spending his last year of medical school at the University of Kansas in Rosedale, now part of Kansas City, and graduating in 1906. Thereafter he taught anatomy classes at the Kansas Medical College until it merged with the University of Kansas School of Medicine in 1913.

During World War I, Crabb served with the Washburn Ambulance Company and in first aid stations on European battlegrounds; by the end of the war he reached the rank of major. Afterward, Crabb practiced family medicine in Topeka until his retirement in 1954 on his eighty-fifth birthday. He also served as a trustee of the Central Congregational Church and of Washburn College, now University, in Topeka and was on the first board of directors for the earliest Menninger Sanitarium.

John Crabb died 17 March 1961.
