Biog. Sketch (Full):
Stuart Carson Averill was born 31 May 1924 in Sacramento, California. He studied at Johns Hopkins, served a stint in the U.S. Navy on a destroyer in the Pacific during the war, and completed his undergraduate medical studies at the University of California - Berkeley in 1948. He received a masters in anatomy from the same institution in 1950, and in 1952 he earned his medical degree from the University of California School of Medicine - San Francisco.
Averill held a rotating internship at the San Francisco County Hospital upon graduation, and then he moved to Topeka in 1953 to become a resident with the Topeka State Hospital through the Menninger School of Psychiatry, a position he held again in 1956-1958. In 1954 he was hired by the Boys Industrial School as staff psychiatrist, working with the Kansas Five-Year Program, and from 1958-1972 he served as clinical director to the school.
In 1972 Averill became a staff psychiatrist for the adult outpatient clinic at Menninger, and in 1973 he graduated from the Topeka Institute for Psychoanalysis (TIP). In 1975 he completed the course in child analysis from the same institution. In 1984 Averill was appointed medical director of the C.F. Menninger Memorial Hospital's adult department. He briefly served as director of TIP, from 1994 until his death.
Averill held leadership positions in the Topeka Psychoanalytic Society, the Kansas Medical Society, the Kansas Psychiatric Society, the Shawnee County Medical Society, and the Kansas Group Psychotherapy Service; he was also a member of the American Psychiatric Association and the Kansas District Branch of the APA, the Association for Child Psychoanalysis, the American Medical Association, and other related professional organizations.
Stuart C. Averill was married to Elizabeth and had four children: Elizabeth, Timothy, Thomas, and Richard. Averill died in 1996.
