Biography
Biog. Sketch (Full): Harry Guntrip was born in 1901 in England. The loss of a brother early in his life led to a great deal of trouble between himself and his mother as he grew up, and this also led to his own interest in psychology and psychoanalysis. A Protestant minister, Guntrip was a major contributor to object relations theory, which describes the processes by which a developing mind grows in relation to others--both real and internalized versions of others--in one's environment. He was psychoanalyzed by both William Ronald Dodds Fairbairn and Donald Woods Winnicott, both major British psychotherapists. Guntrip died in 1975.
