Biography

Biog. Sketch (Full): Smith Ely Jelliffe was born 27 October, 1866 in New York City. He studied engineering at the Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute, received his medical degree from Columbia University, and also received training in botany and pharmaceutical work.

Jelliffe was a founder of psychoanalysis in the United States, an early adherent to Sigmund Freud; he was also a pioneer in the study of psychosomatic medicine. He co-founded the Psychoanalytic Review with collaborator William Allanson White, the first English language publication for psychoanalysis. He also served as president of various professional organizations, including the New York Psychiatric Society, the New York Neurological Society, and the American Psychopathological Association. He edited the Journal of Nervous and Mental Diseases for over 40 years.

Smith Ely Jelliffe died at home on 25 September 1945.
