Papers of Philip B. Menninger

Biographical sketch: Philip Bratton Menninger was born on 22 September 1928 in Topeka, Kan., the second son of William Clair and Catharine Wright Menninger. On 16 May 1959 he married Georgia Wilma Haid in St. Louis, Missouri, and they had two daughters, Beverly Ann and Susan Louise.

After graduating high school, Philip joined the U.S. Army, serving active duty from 1951-1953 and then remaining in the Reserves. Philip Menninger graduated from Washburn University with a bachelors in business administration. After finishing university, Philip followed in the family footsteps and began working for the Menninger Foundation, serving in a variety of administrative staff positions, including as director of development services and director of employee wellness. He was also on the Board of Trustees for 40 years.

Philip Menninger has been active in a variety of professional and community organizations, such as the National Association for Hospital Development, the Direct Mail Marketing or Fundraising Association, the Mid-America Hospital Development Directors' Roundtable, the Topeka Lions Club, the Boys' Clubs of America and of Topeka, the Kaw Valley Bicycle Touring Club and the League of American Wheelmen, and the Association of the U.S. Army. His interests, like many other Menninger family members, have also included stamp collecting and ornithology.

Abstract: Philip Menninger's papers form a small group of materials within the Menninger Archives, focusing largely on his professional efforts on behalf of the Menninger Foundation and on his personal interests, such as Boy Scouts and bicycling. His papers span the majority of his life from the early 1940s through the mid-1980s; see also manuscripts collection 844 for some overlapping materials directly donated by Phil Menninger before the Kansas Historical Society received the Menninger Archives.

Ownership/Custodial Hist.: The items in this sub-set of materials were donated along with the entirety of the Menninger Archives to the Kansas Historical Society in 2003. Prior to that, Philip Menninger had donated some of his private manuscript materials over the years. The materials in these two collections may overlap in both topic and time period.
