Abstract: Dean Collins' papers in the Menninger Archives consist of two series of subject files and administrative records he maintained while working with Menninger, from throughout most of his time with the foundation. The records document his duties and concerns while running his section (II North) in the C.F. Menninger Memorial Hospital, his directorship of the international psychiatry training program at the Menninger School of Psychiatry and other work her performed with the foundation, as well as work he performed for other institutions and committees, task forces, and associations. Both series are organized mostly in alphabetical order by topic and overlap in time period. They may also overlap in topic, so researchers may need to view both series for all information on a topic in Collins' papers.

Biography

Biog. Sketch (Full): Dean Tracy Collins was born 19 March 1928 in Junction City, Kansas. He received his bachelors from the University of Kansas in Lawrence in 1950, and in 1955 he graduated from the KU Medical School with his medical degree. He then held a number of post-graduate fellowships and residencies in such locations as the Panama Canal Zone, Switzerland, Germany, and at numerous psychiatric hospitals in Topeka, Kansas. These included the Topeka State Hospital, the C.F. Menninger Memorial Hospital (CFMMH), and the Kansas Neurological Institute.

In 1960 Collins became a staff psychiatrist at the Winfield State Hospital and Training Center in Kansas, becoming acting clinical director and then acting superintendent. In 1963 he came back to the Menninger Foundation and joined the CFMMH staff as a staff psychiatrist, also serving as a consulting psychiatrist with the Kansas Neurological Institute and becoming a faculty member of the Menninger School of Psychiatry.

Collins gained greater responsibility at CFMMH and at the MSP, eventually serving as assistant director to CFMMH and director of education for the CFMMH. He was also team leader for the Carriage House project. He served on numerous committees at the MSP, including as a member of the Admissions Committee, the Visiting Professors Committee, and eventually taking over as director of the MSP's international psychiatry training program.

Collins held a number of positions and memberships in various professional associations and boards, including presidency of the Kansas Psychiatric Society, examiner for the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, secretary/treasurer and president for the Mid-Continent Psychiatric Association, and president of the MSP Alumni Association, as well as serving on the Advisory Committee to the Kansas Medicaid Program. He also held many civic positions, such as on the board of directors for the Camp Fire Girls, the steering committee of the Shawnee County Drug Abuse Control, and treasurer of the Topeka Chamber Music Series.

Dean Collins married Elisabeth Bartholdi on 16 May 1959. He died in 2004.
