Biographical sketch:
William D Woodburn was on born November 27, 1940 at Pratt, Kansas. He grew-up in Linn County Kansas and graduated from the University of Kansas, William Allen White School of Journalism in 1963. He worked for the Kansas City STAR-TIMES after graduation.
In 1965, he was hired by the Santa Fe Railway and held various positions in their advertising department at Topeka, Los Angeles, including General Manager-Advertising at Chicago. Woodburn retired in 1988 as President of Santa Fe’s in-house advertising agency.

Scope and content: This collection contains documenting activities in the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway's Advertising Department. Included in the collection is a transcript of an interview conducted by George Lazarus with Fred Tipple (September 15, 1964); original chico ad (1946) Santa Fe television activity; speeches given by Chuck Jones and William D. Woodburn; 20 Short Stories of Santa Fe Freight Service; article announcing Carl Birchfield becomes guiding head of the advertising department; Reprint from Printed Ink - A study in consistent railroad advertising by Edward Hungerford (March, 1923); William Haskell Simpson's death notice; Santa Fe Advertising; The story behind Santa Fe trademarks; A salute to Fred Tipple (November 22, 1978); Announcing change in the staff, Fred A. Tipple retirement and William D. Woodburn appointed President of Advertising Direction, Inc., an affiliate of Santa Fe Company (December 1, 1978); and memorandums and correspondence.
