In 1867 he settled in Leavenworth, Kansas, and remained in the state. He served in the state legislature, was admitted to the bar, and worked with the Topeka Daily Capital. Coney also served as the commander of the Kansas Department of the Grand Army of the Republic and as Vice President of the National Irish Historical Society, among other societies and fraternities in which he participated. Coney died in 1932.

Abstract:

The collection consists of incoming correspondence sent to Coney, much of it political, as well as some of his own outgoing letters; contracts and agreements; meeting minutes for the Veterans Rights' Union from the 1880s; political scrapbooks, mostly consisting of editorials and other newspaper clippings pasted into booklets, along with handwritten notes possibly for speeches; the constitution, by-laws, and proceedings of the Central Irish-American Blaine and Logan Club of 1884, created in order to secure the elections of James G. Blaine and John A. Logan as President and Vice-President of the United States, along with addresses to Irish Americans and other materials pasted into the volume; and other such materials.

Some of the materials deal with various Irish organizations, such as the Fenian Brotherhood, United Irishmen, and the Irish Republican Association. The materials also concern the Kansas State Historical Society, the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago, and the Grand Army of the Republic as well as other veterans organizations, demonstrating the variety of Coney's interests and concerns.
