Biographical sketch:
Charles James Drew, born in Connecticut in 1836, spent much of his early adulthood on the sea. He enlisted with the United States Navy in 1861 and served aboard the U.S.S. Essex and was honorably discharged in 1864. In 1867 Drew went to Junction City, Geary County, Kansas. In 1871 in Seneca, Nemaha County he married Emma M. Bouton, originally of New York; they had two children, Mary (born 22 July 1874) and Charles Henry (born 20 August 1877), but Mary died in infancy.
Drew held a variety of positions after leaving the sea, including as bricklayer and stonemason, in the grocery business, contract work, etc. He served on the city council from 1895-1899, and in 1899 he was elected mayor of Topeka and served in this position for 1899 and 1900. He was a member of the First Congregational Church and Lincoln Post No. 1 of the Grand Army of the Republic, Kansas Department. Charles Drew died on 6 January 1916. His wife Emma died in 1934.
Abstract: The collection consists of personal materials related to the Drews. It includes diaries and account books from Charles James and Emma Drew from the 1910s and 1920s, noting the weather, visits from friends and family, health, and other daily and world activities and events, as well as Drew's discharge papers from the navy and his commission as Topeka mayor. It also includes documents related to Emma Drew going through the process of receiving her husband's navy pension after he died; sympathy cards, telegrams, memorial books, and other such materials from both Charles J.'s and Emma's deaths to Emma and to her son Charles H.; and other such materials.
