Abstract: The collection consists of assembled materials from various sources providing information about the history of Chase County, Kansas. It includes correspondence, meeting minutes, and other materials such as from the Chase County Historical Society and regarding the Chase County courthouse in Cottonwood Falls. It also includes a geological study from 1983 of Chase County and Jack Spring Cave, a minute book for Knights of Pythias lodge no. 204 in Elmdale, from 1902-1914, and a letter of support for restoring the Lower Fox Creek School.

Administrative History

Administrative History: Chase County in east-central Kansas was established on February 11, 1859 and organized on March 15, 1859. It was named for Salmon Portland Chase (1808-1873), in turn governor of Ohio, United States senator, Secretary of the Treasury under President Lincoln, and chief justice of the U.S. Supreme Court. Chase's county seat and most populous city is Cottonwood Falls. Townships include Bazaar, Cedar, Cottonwood, Diamond Creek, Falls, Homestead, Matfield, Strong, and Toledo.
