Abstract: The collection mostly consists of genealogical information for the Raymond family from research begun by Frederic Raymond ca. 1914 and continued by his daughter Elizabeth. The collection includes notebooks, genealogical correspondence, clippings, family group sheets and time lines, photographs, and other such records. There is additional information for the Bassett, Bennett, Conwell, Gleason, Henry, Jayne, Jepherson, Miller, Murray, Raymond, Read/Reed, Robinson, Sayre, Spearbeck, Wheeler, and Woodward families. Also in the collection are microfilmed and typed transcript copies of Joseph Murray Raymond's diary and letters from the 1860s while he was with Company I, 101st Ohio Volunteer Infantry Regiment, and letters and other papers from Frederic Newton Raymond while he traveled around Kansas.

Biography

Biog. Sketch (Full): Frederic Newton Raymond was born 27 January 1873 in Lawrence, Kansas, the son of Joseph Murray and Hila Bennitt Raymond. He received his B.A. from the University of Kansas (KU) (Lawrence) in 1896 and his M.A. from Columbia University (New York) in 1897. In 1925 he attended the University of Paris (France). In 1901 Raymond joined the faculty of the English Department at KU and remained in Lawrence until his death in 1961. In addition to memberships in several professional organizations, Professor Raymond was a member of the Kansas State Historical Society and was an organizer of the Douglas County Historical Society.

Elizabeth Raymond was born in Lawrence, Kansas, on 23 March 1918, the daughter of Frederic Newton and Ida Gleason Raymond. She received her A.B. and A.M. degrees from the University of Kansas (Lawrence) and an M.A. from Radcliffe College (Cambridge, Mass.). She was married to Dr. Robert S. Raymond, who taught at Ohio University (Oxford), Wichita State University (Kans.), and Washburn University (Topeka, Kan.). Mrs. Raymond has been a teacher and librarian. The Raymonds returned to Lawrence after Dr. Raymond's retirement.
