Scope and content: A letter on August 6, 1877, invites Kansas Governor Anthony to attend the on August 30, 1877, the dedication of a monument to the memory of John Brown, the hero Martyr, Fredrick Brown, and others who were killed during the Battle of Osawatomie on August 30, 1856. The letter encloses a programme of the events that will take place. An invitation sent on May 17, 1877, from the Board of Directors of the Neosho Valley District Fair Association invites Governor Anthony to attend and deliver an address at the Annual Fair held September 24 ? 28, 1877. A letter from Ed. R. Smith requests the Governor?s presence and to act as orator for the occasion on May 30, Decoration Day, now known as Memorial Day.
