Abstract: The National Organization for Women (NOW) records consist of state level organization records for Kansas. Included are correspondence, position statements, educational pamphlets & brochures, membership lists, and other documents regarding NOW's activities in promoting equal rights for women. Several of the brochures and educational pamphlets concern abortion and support the pro-choice movement, providing opinions and studies supporting abortion rights. Also included are materials from the pro-life movement used to develop counter arguments in support of pro-choice. The position statements state NOW's opinions and positions on a variety of issues such as AIDS, affirmative action, boycotts, childcare, economic rights, education, homophobia, lesbian rights, insurance, judiciary, legislative goals, media, mental health, pregnancy disability, pay equity, religion, sports, self image, reproductive freedom, prostitution, violence against women, and other topics. The collection contains chapter organization manuals and chapter development reports regarding establishing, promoting, and growing new NOW chapters. The correspondence documents internal communication, as well as communication between NOW representatives and state & federal legislators concerning support or opposition to various pieces of legislation affecting women. Also included are materials from the Emporia and Topeka, Kan., chapters, ca. 1970.
