The Literary League was organized in October 1888 as a women's study club with ten original members in Emporia's Second Ward. Modeled upon then contemporary Chautauqua Circle, Pioneer Women's Club, and Sorosis groups, the Literary League's organizing objective was to provide growth and mutual help to its members and community. It is a member of the General Federation of Women's Clubs of Kansas.
