Biography

Biog. Sketch (Full): Leander Hamilton McCormick, son of Leander James and Henrietta Hamilton McCormick, was born in Chicago, Illinois on 27 May 1859. McCormick came from a line of inventors; his father and two uncles formed a company that would become International Harvester. Hamilton received his bachelors in science from Amherst College in Massachusetts and also studied law at Columbia University in New York, as well as architecture.

After completing his education, McCormick began traveling around the world. On his travels he met and married Constance Plummer of Canterbury, England, on 15 February 1887. They had three children: Leander James, Edward Hamilton, and Allister Hamilton. The family lived in England for several years, and McCormick traveled, sculpted, collected art, and developed numerous inventions, including airplanes, motorcycles, torpedoes, and clocks. He wrote a textbook in characterology, a multidisciplinary approach to understanding individuals' characters through the application of physiognomy, phrenology, pathognomy, anthropology, ethnology, and sociology.
