Also, a manuscript written by Gerald George titled The Smile That Was A Lie, The Case of Duane Earl Pope. The research files document the case and trial of Duane Earl Pope, a college educated young man that robbed the Farmers State Bank in Big Springs, Nebraska and killed three people. Pope grew up on a farm near Roxbury, Kansas and graduated from McPherson College. While in college, he played the lead in the junior play, was senior class president, and co-captain of the football team. On June 4, 1965, five days after graduating from college, he rented a car and traveled to Big Springs where he robbed the bank and killed three bank employees and wounded another. The McPherson College president pleaded with Pope to surrender. Seven days after the robbery and murders, on June 11, Pope telephoned his college president and surrendered to the Kansas City police.
