Designed and purpose-built by the Kress Company, Iola’s Kress Building is an early example of corporate commercial architecture. The building is important for its commercial history and architectural design. The period of significance is 1909-1972 after the building’s reconstruction due to a fire prior to 1909. Samuel Kress thought of his stores as public art that would connect with the surrounding street. The Iola Kress Building was designed by Julius H. Zeitner and Seymour Burrell.
