Architectural Historian

Position Description | State Posting

This position is responsible for timely reviews of projects in accordance with state and federal laws for the protection of historic properties; educates public and government officials about protective laws; reviews projects submitted by property owners, federal and state agencies and local governments through the Kansas Review & Compliance system and analyzes their potential to affect the state’s historic properties; reviews and evaluates proposals for conformance with the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties. The employee must be able to read, understand, and explain architectural drawings and specifications. The employee must possess skills necessary to provide excellent customer service.

Responsibilities include recruitment and training of historic sites staff, evaluating the effectiveness of staff members, travel to state historic sites, and coordinating programs and projects happening at the sites.

The Third Party Host is a part-time position who is responsible for staffing after hours third party events at the Kansas Museum of History. Schedule will be dependent on event bookings but will primarily occur after business hours (5 PM) during the weekdays and on weekends. The host is required to be on site during the entirety of the event and will serve as the main point of contact for any questions or issues that arise. The host reports to the Tour and Events Coordinator, who is responsible for all event coordination and communication. The host will assist with setting up the event, which may include making coffee, turning on A/V equipment, and ensuring the maintenance staff are following the event layout. The host will work with other staff on site, which may include a VSR to staff the gallery during open hours, maintenance staff, and 24/7 security.

Position provides maintenance services required for special events. Working weekday nights after 4pm and weekends. This position will average 12 hours per week. Duties include setting up and taking down tables and chairs, AV equipment, movable partitions and stages. This position is also responsible for general facility cleaning before, during and after events. Candidates must be able to lift 60 lbs.

Position Description | State Posting

The Site Co-Administrator performs specialized work directing the operations of Hollenberg Pony Express Station State Historic Site. Work involves managing the operations of a state historic site by developing and conducting programs; providing information to the public; conducting primary and secondary research on the site; serving as a liaison in the community; supervising support staff and volunteers; identifying the need for preservation treatment for historic objects and structures and maintaining site property and grounds. Work also includes participating in short and long-range planning and promoting community involvement in site activities. This position is seasonal, mid-April to mid-October, up to 20 hours/week.
