Descriptive Information

Scope and content: Administrative records from the Menninger Foundation School for Psychiatric Aides (MFSPA), an experimental education program founded with funding from a Rockefeller Foundation grant and mostly housed at the Topeka State Hospital. Dr. Bernard Hall served as director of the school. Two major sub-series in the materials are graduates' files and correspondence with a wide variety Veterans Administration hospitals around the United States, other states' public welfare and mental health agencies, other states' hospitals, the National Association for Mental Health (notably Paul Harris), other nursing and health organizations, and private institutions.

Topics for the rest of the records include alumni of the school, curriculum, morale of psychiatric aides, workshops and study topics, publication of a textbook for teaching psychiatric aides, student work, etc. Types of materials found in the series include report cards, transcripts, memoranda and correspondence, observations of students and their work, admission applications, manuals, job descriptions, sample forms and record keeping materials, brochures, newsletters and yearbooks, reports (including the final report for the Rockefeller grant), filled-in questionnaires, bibliographies, course outlines, galley proofs, etc. Includes some correspondence and related materials between Dr. Hall and other institutions implementing psychiatric aide education programs after the MFSPA completed its experimental program in 1952.
