Preservation - SHPO

Beginning October 1, 2025, the federal government entered a shutdown. As a result, non-essential services are now suspended until funding legislation is approved. The Kansas State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) may be unable to submit National Register of Historic Places nominations and other materials to the National Park Service (NPS) for review. Other federal agencies being furloughed may not be able to proceed with consultation or submit project review requests to the SHPO as required under federal preservation law. Kansas SHPO continues to accept and review all submissions regardless of program and will submit materials to our federal colleagues as soon as we are allowed to do so.

The SHPO or State Historic Preservation Office works with issues related to historic buildings and structures, associated programs and tax incentives, and archeology. The SHPO helps to preserve, protect, and honor cultural, historical, and archeological resources of Kansas.
