Kansas Rock Before Kansas: 1963-1970

Join us for this special Museum After Hours series celebrating the 150th anniversary of the Kansas Historical Society. Michael Church, director of State Archives, will talk with Jim Reardon and Evan Johnson about the beginnings of rock music in Kansas in the 1960s and its impact on the upper Midwest states. Jim managed bands with John Brown at Mid Continent Entertainment, Inc. at the Red Dog Inn (Liberty Hall), Lawrence, and later started the Dark Horse Inn and Reardon & Associates talent agency in Hays. Evan was the drummer for the Red Dogs among other bands. Bands discussed may include The Blue Things, The Fabulous Flippers, The Red Dogs, Spider and the Crabs, The Rising Suns, The Young Raiders, The Jerms, The Fabulous Apostles, The Soul Express, King Midas and the Mufflers and more. This presentation will be held in the State Archives Research Room and by Zoom. In-person attendees can enjoy a tour of the State Archives prior to the program. Refreshments will be served.
