Republic - Ask an Archeologist: Identifying and Preserving Artifacts
1-5 p.m. Saturday, April 19, 2025
Pawnee Indian Museum State Historic Site near Republic
In honor of Archeology Month, Project and Outreach Archeologist Paige Bump is hosting programs across Kansas to generate interest in the field and broaden understanding of artifacts! Attend an upcoming event nearby to discover answers to these questions and more:
- What are artifacts and why are they important?
- What types of artifacts are commonly found in my area?
- What should I do if I come across a prehistoric or historic item?
- Would this object be considered an artifact?
- Can you date it, explain its origin, and describe its use?
Attendees are invited to bring their collections to these events; Bump will identify prehistoric and historic artifacts on a first-come, first-served basis. A maximum of five to 10 items will be examined per household. No appraisals will be made.
If you cannot attend one of these events but would still like your artifacts identified, visit www.kansashistory.gov/14599 to learn how. Please email artifact or event inquiries to Project and Outreach Coordinator Paige Bump: paige.bump@ks.gov.
