Origin of Name: | For James Henry Lane (1814-1866), a leader of the Free State forces in territorial Kansas and one of the first U.S. senators from the state. During the Civil War, he helped organize several regiments of volunteers, including one of the first black regiments. Never very stable mentally, he committed suicide in July of 1866. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
