Artists from Kansas

Kansans have played a role in the development of arts throughout the state's history. Early artists in Kansas gave us visual images of the times of Bleeding Kansas and the Civil War. Artists in the latest 19th century provided illustrations of Kansas for the nation's media that helped to promote the state. A number of African Americans from Kansas were influential in the Harlem Renaissance of the 1920s, portraying their experiences in Kansas to a national audience. American Indian artists have worked to preserve and share their cultural traditions, along with other folk artists from a range of immigrant groups.
