QUILT
[Bedding]
Accession Number: 1980.264.0
Physical Description: Quilt in Roman Stripe pattern, also known as Rail Fence. Made up of many small blocks, each formed of four strips of fabric in alternating light silks and dark velvets. The quilt was made by the donor’s grandmother, Juliet Millard Clark, who came to Kansas with her family in 1868. Clark is buried in Topeka Cemetery.
History of Object: According to letter from donor in accession file, her mother used this quilt as a throw. She believed it was made by her grandmother, Juliet Millard Clark, and her great-grandmother, and that the fabrics were from dresses belonging to these women. Clark was born near Rochester, N.Y. After attending a ladies seminary in New York, she moved to Illinois to teach school. She married in that state and later came to Kansas. Records on Ancestry list her as coming to Kansas in 1868 via Wisconsin. The quilt?s style and the presence of a machine-quilted border date it to the last quarter of the 19th century, when Clark and her husband, Julius Taylor Clark, were residing in Topeka with their children. The couple are buried in Topeka Cemetery.
