- First worked as a trapeze artist
- Developed character of Weary Willie, a sad, white-faced clown
- Was a major attraction for the Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Circus from 1942-1956
- Featured in motion picture The Greatest Show on Earth in 1952 and in Broadway productions
