- Began organizing choral groups in Coffeyville before she was a teenager
- Served as choral trainer for original Broadway production of Porgy and Bess
- Led nationally celebrated Eva Jessye Choir through Europe after World War II
- Walked with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., during 1963 civil rights march
