Ferrell Family Papers
1 COLLECTION SUMMARY
1.1 Abstract
The Ferrell Family Papers represents the life experiences of five generations of the Ferrell family and their journey to becoming an indelible part of Kansas history. The Ferrell Ranch, founded in 1888 by pioneer Wichitan Lloyd Bascom Ferrell, serves as the focal point of the collection, and the vast majority of the records describe the activities of the principal heads of the ranch. Upon his passing, Lloyd Bascom Ferrell transferred ownership of the Ferrell Ranch down to his son and began a family tradition that persists even today.
All records in the collection were created, gathered, and/or stored by members of the Ferrell family and have been passed down to each generation. Record types found in the Ferrell Family Records collection include correspondence, diaries, memos, varied financial and legal documents, photographs, newspapers and magazines, personal research notes on several distinct topics, and a number of unique artifacts.

1.8 Notes
This finding aid describes materials held by the Kansas State Historical Society. Materials may be used in the Research Room in the society’s Center for Historical Research during regular research hours. Support for telephone, mail and online research and reference is limited.
(General)Items created by or sent to members of the Ferrell family that were not one of the ranch heads (LBF, GPF Sr., GPF Jr., GPF III) are grouped by closest association and/or generation. In the case of siblings, their material is filed according to generation.
(Series IV)Series IV, Business and Financial, has some informal folder-level miscellaneous categories within the various subseries. These miscellaneous items loosely fit their associated subseries (i.e., invoices) but are often lacking sufficient context (dates, etc.) to properly places them elsewhere.
(Series IV)Series IV, Business and Financial, has a specific subseries (Subseries II) for ranch-related business documents. In general, these documents are labeled as such (i.e., the invoice is specifically marked "Ferrell Ranch" or something similar), and if it was not labeled in this manner, they were generally filed elsewhere with personal financial papers. However, there are some exceptions to this rule; in cases where the document could be linked directly to ranch activities (e.g., an invoice for cattle feed), it was filed in Subseries II regardless of whether or not it explicitly has "Ferrell Ranch" written on it.
(Series IV)The Bank Records (Subseries III) of Series IV, Business and Financial, are largely stored in acid-free envelopes due to their somewhat irregular size(s) and quantities; this prevents items like checks from falling out of or stretching folders to the point where they are damaged. To the front of the envelopes are legal-size folders describing the following envelopes contents (i.e., Lloyd B. Ferrell, Fourth National Bank, 1910s). If there are very few bank records for a particular year or bank, they may simply be stored in chronological order in the legal-sized folder.
In a continuing effort to improve the completeness and accuracy of finding aids, revisions are made as more or new information becomes available. Consequently, this finding aid may differ slightly from what appears on the microfilm or on the Kansas State Historical Society’s web site.

2 BIOGRAPHY OR HISTORY
With its roots stretching back to the 18th century and beyond, the Ferrell family has had a profound role in the figurative and literal shaping of the City of Wichita and the Sunflower State. Much of the family’s legacy resides in the fields, barns, and buildings of the Ferrell (4L) Ranch, founded in 1888 by Lloyd Bascom Ferrell. Despite the distinguished history and impact of the Ferrell family, the story of Ferrell Ranch and this pioneer family of Kansas is often unknown to those outside of the area.
Born on October 17th, 1852, in what would become French Creek, West Virginia, Lloyd Bascom Ferrell was the eldest of four siblings born to farmer Garland Thompson Ferrell and his wife Celina Webster Ferrell. A decade after Lloyd’s birth, misfortune began to plague the Ferrell household. In 1862, both Lloyd’s father and one of his sisters passed away unceremoniously, and after the family moved to Illinois later in the 1860s, Lloyd’s mother passed away as well. Little documentary evidence exists detailing the remainder of Lloyd B. Ferrell’s childhood, but by 1871, he had moved to Council Grove, Kansas, and opened a small general store.
After several years of growth and expansion, Lloyd B. Ferrell sold his interest in the Council Grove store in 1876 and moved to Wichita, Kansas, where he opened a telegraph office that later expanded into another general store. In 1877, Lloyd married schoolteacher Tarsy S. Myers of Assumption, Illinois, whom he had met as a youth while living in the area. Returning to Wichita with his new wife, Lloyd continued to expand his influence throughout the city and had a considerable role in its growth. In addition to owning the telegraph store, Lloyd eventually partnered with the Merchants Telephone and Telegraph Company in 1881 to open the first telephone service in Wichita and was responsible for platting several sections in the city as well. By the late 1880s, Lloyd gained ownership of and began working on land near Beaumont, Kansas, which would eventually become the multi-generational Ferrell Ranch.
Lloyd B. Ferrell remained active in Wichita and beyond while working to make the Ferrell Ranch prosperous. In addition to raising cattle, chickens, pigs, and horses, Lloyd grew a wide variety of crops on his property, including cucumbers, potatoes, apples, onions, and more. Geological surveys and test wells uncovered oil on the ranch as well, and by 1918, extraction operations were fully functional. In Wichita, Lloyd constructed, leased, and sold various kinds of real estate to fortune-seekers looking to settle down and build lives in the booming city.
On June 14th, 1928, Lloyd Bascom Ferrell died in his home at 310 East Elm Street, Wichita, Kansas. Local newspapers celebrated Lloyd as a modest yet upstanding figure who left his mark throughout Wichita and the state of Kansas. Lloyd’s legacy and the ownership of Ferrell Ranch was passed to his son, Garland Peter Ferrell Senior, beginning the generation-spanning tradition of the ranch.
Garland Peter Ferrell Sr. (“Garland”) was born in Wichita, Kansas, on March 24th, 1879, prior to the founding of Ferrell Ranch. As a born and raised Kansan, Garland received his early education through local schools and graduated from a high school in Wichita. Following a year at Fairmount College (currently known as Wichita State University), Garland left his home state to attend Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where he studied journalism. During his schooling, Garland exchanged many letters with his family members in which he described his experiences away from Kansas and inquired as to his family’s well-being. Many of his father’s letters detailed the various happenings in Wichita and the management of the Ferrell Ranch.
In the early 1900s, Garland P. Ferrell Sr. graduated from Harvard University and married his sweetheart Helen Bayne Reilly, whom he likely met before or while attending Fairmount College. Their union quickly proved fruitful, and the pair settled down in the Boston area with twin sons Robert Myers Ferrell and Lloyd Bayne Ferrell. Garland briefly worked as a freelance journalist before joining the Boston Herald and later the New York Herald as a regular correspondent. By 1910 and at the urging of his parents, Garland and his family had relocated to Wichita, Kansas, where Garland assisted his father on the Ferrell Ranch while working as managing editor for the Wichita Eagle newspaper. In late 1923, Garland moved to Irvine, California, to take care of a struggling orange and walnut ranch owned by his mother and father. When Lloyd Bascom Ferrell passed away in 1928, Garland chose to carry on his father’s work and run the Ferrell Ranch in Beaumont along with his family’s various business interests throughout Kansas and beyond. Garland himself passed away 41 years later on September 9th, 1969, after retiring from ranch work and moving back to Wichita. Like Lloyd before him, Garland eventually passed the Ferrell Ranch down to his own son, Garland Peter Ferrell Junior.
Born on December 10th, 1907, in Arlington, Massachusetts, Garland Peter Ferrell Jr. (“Jack”) was the third Ferrell to own and maintain the Ferrell Ranch. By 1910, Jack’s family had departed Boston and resettled in Wichita, Kansas. In the early 1920s, Jack went to live in California, and it was there that he attended Tustin Union High School in Tustin, California, and graduated in 1926. Immediately after high school, Jack attended Pomona College in Claremont, California, to study business. Following his graduation from Pomona in 1930, Jack traveled around the world and later returned to attend Harvard University, where he received a Master of Business degree in 1933. After his brother Robert’s death in the same year, Jack returned to Kansas from Massachusetts to help his father on the Ferrell Ranch, and he eventually became the manager of the ranch himself. Jack played a vital role in modernizing ranch operations and was instrumental in guiding the Ferrell Ranch through major events such as the Dust Bowl and the Second World War. In addition to his ranching activities, he was also quite active in the public sphere and served on a number of public committees and community boards. Like his father and grandfather before him, Jack passed leadership of the ranch down to his own son: Garland Peter Ferrell III.
The fourth head of the Ferrell Ranch, Garland Peter Ferrell III (“Pete”), was born in 1952 to parents Jack Ferrell and Isabelle Haines Ferrell. Like his namesakes, Pete’s life was heavily influenced by the Ferrell Ranch. After graduating from Grinnell College in in 1974, Pete returned to the ranch to work on the land passed down through three previous generations of the Ferrell family. As head of the Ferrell Ranch, Pete pursued new initiatives to help ensure the continued prosperity of the ranch; in 1995, he helped promote the production of grass-fed beef through the formation of a cooperative and later a company, and in 2005, he leased out land for the construction of the Elk River Wind Farm on the property. At present, Pete remains the principal owner of the historic Ferrell Ranch, and he continues to serve as an advocate for sustainable ranching and clean energy development projects.

The collection does include some records from other members of the Ferrell family, but most of them center on or around the four Ferrell men listed above that owned and operated the Ferrell Ranch.
