  • Left Texas home at age 15 to pursue education in North
  • Sacrificed teaching position to protest segregation at Walker School where she taught in Johnson County
  • Taught students in parents’ living rooms in protest
  • Said “Schools shouldn’t be for a color. They should be for children.”
  • Successfully helped desegregate Walker School in 1948
