- Moved to Lawrence in 1855 and joined free-state forces
- Nicknamed “Grim Chieftain”
- Served as president of the Topeka and Leavenworth constitutional conventions
- Elected one of state’s first U.S. senators
- Formed the First Kansas Colored Volunteers
