North Topeka Baptist Church Records
COLLECTION SUMMARY
1.1 Introduction/Abstract
The North Topeka Baptist Church collection contains records created by the church staff and their members from their founding in 1869 to their closure in 2022. The records reflect the activities, community involvement, and administrative aspect of the church. North Topeka Baptist created multiple organizations and committees within the church especially for women, youth, and to maintain their presence in Topeka, the state, and nation. They were also a part of national Baptist associations. The bulk of their material, though, details their business meetings and finances along with their sermons, anniversaries, staff and members. The manuscript materials were received as a gift on March 23, 2023, to the Kansas State Historical Society.
The collection varies in format and material type. Those include membership cards, photographs and scrapbooks, AV material, blueprints, business records, directories, church histories, publications, bulletins, clippings, correspondence, daybooks, and financial records.

2 BIOGRAPHY OR HISTORY
Rev. J. A. Barrett founded the North Topeka Baptist Church as the Indian Creek Baptist Church in 1869. One year later, the name was changed to its current one because of Topeka’s population increase. The congregation began with 12 members. Under Rev. Barrett’s 14-year leadership, membership grew to 394.
Almost 100 years later, after already a couple building relocations, the church survived a flood in 1951. During reconstruction, members went to service at Bethel Covenant Church. The parsonage on West Gordon Street was torn down due to the amount of damage and used for a parking lot, while the Sunday School annex had damage to windows, doors, and heating. By 1952, the church was nearly repaired with an educational annex, which replaced the former Sunday School annex, now affixed to their current building off NE Gordon Street.
The educational annex housed the offices of the ministers and secretaries, a chapel, a meeting room for 30 people, 15 school classrooms, and a nursery. Additionally, one of the few pipe organs in Topeka, Kansas was in their main building. The church was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2011. Information on its historic registry as well as detailed descriptions of the building and church can be found on the Kansas Historic Resources Inventory site.
It officially closed in 2022 and was donated to the Topeka Rescue Mission with limitations on its usage due to its historic registry status. Although no official reason for the closure was announced or noted by the church, a few of the remaining members highlighted a shrinking congregation and limited funds to continue operations. Annual church reports appear to support these statements. In 1971 they had a $36,520 proposed budget with 353 members and in 2021 they had a $80,000 proposed budget (which is equal to about $10,000 in 1971) with around 200 members in 2021 according to their shepherding list count.
A church newsletter was mailed out each week containing all the functions of the church for the following week, a column written by the minister or a layman in the church, information concerning members, historical remembrances, and information about the church, community, and other areas of interest. Business meetings happened quarterly in April, July, and October, as well as, annually on the second Wednesday of January.
The church established various organizations including the Women’s Missionary Society, boys' youth fellowships (B.Y.F), a choir, and a church school with 25 teachers for 20 classes. According to the Daily State Journal, most of the church’s success (in the early 1900s) was due to 31 years of William Van Ness’ choir leadership. Many musical directors and soloists went out across the country with what they learned from Mr. Van Ness. He composed and arranged entire church services. During that same time, enrollment for Sunday School was at 250 students compared to the range of 1 to 6 students in 2021. For more information on Rev. Barrett, the choir, and other organizations please see Baptist church clippings volume 1 pages 58 and 85 in the Kansas Historical Society collection.
In the 1960s, a mission goal was to increase the ministering spiritual needs of the senior citizens in the community and to establish a ministry to persons in Mobile Home Developments. In addition, the church participated in multiple recreational activities sponsoring a softball team and a basketball team in the YMCA Church league and a six team couples bowling league at Gage Bowl North Lanes. By 1974, they created the Topeka North Outreach, a bus service, prayer groups, Lay Witness Mission as well as a library and a health clinic in the church.
Most of these activities were coordinated through a committee. There was the athletic committee, auditing committee, finance committee, flower committee, hospitality committee, music committee, nominating committee, and the pulpit committee. Moreover, the church nominated representatives for two outside societies: Topeka Baptist Mission Society and the Topeka Council of Churches.
The paid staff of the church included the minister, church secretary, custodian, choir director, and organist. The church had the following officers: moderator, vice-moderator, church clerk, church treasurer, financial secretary, director of Christian Education, and chief usher. The church also had multiple boards including the board of deacons, board of deaconesses, diaconate board, board of trustees, and the board of Christian Education. The Advisory Council consisted of the pastor, moderator, church clerk, church treasurer, financial secretary, chairmen of the boards of deacons, deaconesses, and trustees, the director of Christian Education, the president of the Women’s Missionary Society, the presidents of the Men’s Fellowship, one senior B.Y.F. advisor, and one junior high B.Y.F. advisor.
3 SCOPE AND CONTENTS
The collection encompasses the years 1869-2022 with the bulk of the material spanning from the 1920s to the 1990s. Most of the collection is dated except the photograph series and a few files in the administrative series. The documents reflect the church’s various activities, thus there are a wide array of document types including administrative, financial, correspondence, photographs, clippings, publications, blueprints, etc. The bulk of the documents are under the publication, financial, and administrative series taking up 14 out of 26 boxes in the collection.
There are many individuals who come up in the collection. A few, though, have specific files pertaining to them or their role in the church. Mrs. Inez M. Starbird’s (1902-1981) files are related to her role as head teacher. She has various items throughout the series. Her husband, Mr. Chester P. Starbird (1903-1989), was the church school treasurer. Her son, Mr. James E. “Jim” Starbird (1936-2009), was a 60- year member. There are also documents regarding Mary F. Schenck, the financial secretary; Gary Deeter, pastor; Lawrence Waters, deacon, and Mrs. Lawrence Waters, Sunday School superintendent; Dr. George Wise, executive secretary; and Jeanette Emerts, either the church secretary or clerk.
The collection is arranged into nine series: Meeting minutes & reports, Publications, Financial records, Administrative records, Correspondence, Clippings, Photos & scrapbooks, Blueprints, and Church services & activities. Within each series, there are multiple subseries that relate to the specific activities and events of the church under the broad category of the series title. Within the subseries, most of the items are arranged in chronological order. Items with no date are placed at the beginning of the subseries.
When KHS staff went to pick up the collection, it was arranged by box number, unnumbered and unarranged oversized items, and some unnumbered boxes labeled by subject. The KHS staff created a preliminary sheet describing the physical and intellectual arrangement of the collection. On the sheet, there was mention of the table, or area, where the box was collected. However, the boxes did not denote the table number after box 1. There was a total of 25 numbered boxes of various sizes, 3 unnumbered but subject labeled boxes, and 19 individual oversized items. Within the boxes, most of the collection was arranged at the folder level.
