2 BIOGRAPHY
Ogden Sherman Jones was born on March 23, 1891, in Ogden, Utah to George Washington Jones (1860-1935) and Cora Sherman Jones.[1] The family moved to Lawrence, Kansas in 1896. Jones graduated from Lawrence High School in 1910.[2] Jones then earned his A.B. in geology from the University of Kansas. Jones was a member of Beta Theta Pi and Sigma Gamma Epsilon fraternities.[3] May 1917 Jones married Hazel Lucille Smith. Together they had three sons and one daughter.[4] Their children were: Col. Ogden Sherman Jones Jr. (1925-2012), Alison Lucille Jones Guinotte (1926-2003), Richard Kearney Jones (1928-2020), and Michael Peet Jones (1937-1988).[5] Also in 1917, Jones enlisted in the Army Air Corps.[6] He worked as a flying instructor until the end of WWI.[7] After the War, Jones was employed by Forrester and Cook in Wichita until 1924.[8] He joined the American Association of Petroleum Geologists in 1929. Jones did independent consulting work off and on until 1933, when he gained employment by the State of Kansas in the Water Conservation Department.[9] He became chief geologist for the Division of Sanitation of the Kansas State Board of Health and director of the Oil Field Section in 1936.[10] Jones held multiple positions until health issues forced him to resign in 1951. Jones passed away on December 28, 1952.[11] Jones is interred in Oak Hill Cemetery in Lawrence, Kansas.[12]
