Virtual Bleeding Kansas and the Civil War

Guided virtual tour — Kansas Museum of History, Topeka

Grades — Fifth to eighth

Overview — This tour introduces students to the major historical events in Territorial Kansas through the Civil War (1854 - 1865). Students will tour the Territorial Kansas and Civil War exhibits of the museum gallery to discover stories about pro and anti-slavery conflicts, examine the difficulties of adopting a state constitution, and explore the roles Kansas men and women played during the Civil War.

Kansas History, Government and Social Studies Standards (2020)

Standard #3: Societies are shaped by identities, beliefs, and practices of individuals and groups.

Benchmark 3.1: The student will recognize and evaluate how societies are shaped by the identities, beliefs, and practices of individual groups.

ELA Reading Informational Standards (2017)

SL.7.1: The students will engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions (one-on-one, in groups, and teacher-led) with diverse partners on grade 7 topics, texts, and issues, building on others' ideas and expressing their own clearly.

SL.7.2: The student will analyze the main ideas and supporting details presented in diverse media and formats (e.g. visually, quantitatively, orally) and explain how the ideas clarify a topic, text, or issue under study.
