Stieffel was a member of Co. K, Fifth U.S. infantry, which escorted peace commissioners to their meeting with Kiowa, Apache, Comanche, Cheyenne, and Arapaho Indians on the Medicine Lodge river in October, 1867.

Medicine Lodge will commemorate the signing of these treaties in reenactments on October 12-15, 1967.
