Awards and Grants
The Kansas Historical Foundation honors and encourages achievement in Kansas history by individuals through several awards and grants. The Foundation is the non-profit organization that supports the Kansas State Historical Society (KSHS) programs.
Alfred M. Landon Historical Research Grants

For academic research in the collections of KSHS
- Application deadline is April 15
- $1,000 award: 50 percent awarded when arriving to initiate research, remainder paid after review and acceptance of final report
- Awarded each summer for research to be conducted in the KSHS collections during the following fiscal year, beginning July 1
- Recipients are expected to spend a minimum of two weeks conducting research at KSHS
- Applicants will be notified in writing of the results after the review of their applications
- Public announcement of the grant recipients will be made at the Kansas Historical Foundation Annual Meeting in November
- Successful applicants are not precluded from applying for additional grants in later fiscal years
- The Foundation reserves the right not to award any Landon grants in particular fiscal years based either on the availability of funds or the quality of the applications
- All grant recipients should provide one copy of the final product of their funded research to KSHS
Edward N. Tihen Historical Research Grants

For non-academic research in the collections of KSHS
- Application deadline is April 15
- $500: 50 percent awarded when arriving to initiate the research, remainder paid after review and acceptance of final report
- Awarded each spring for research to be conducted in the collections of KSHS during the following fiscal year, beginning July 1
- Research at other historical societies, archives, and libraries in Kansas will also be supported
- Non-academic researchers are individuals not employed by a college or university
- The Foundation reserves the right not to award any Tihen grants in particular fiscal years based either on the availability of funds or the quality of the applications
Edgar Langsdorf Award for Excellence in Writing
- Presented on an annual basis to authors within the quarterly publication
- There is not application procedure; this award honors articles published each year in Kansas History: A Journal of the Central Plains
- Committee makes the selection by September 1 of each year
- Presentation of a plaque and award of $200 will be made at the Kansas Historical Foundation Annual Meeting in November
Edward N. Tihen Historical Publication Award
- For first-time writers on Kansas history topics
- Applications may be submitted between January 1 and April 15 in odd years
- $500
- Presentation of a plaque and award of $500 will be made at the Kansas Historical Foundation Annual Meeting in November
- Author, or other party submitting a nomination, must include two copies of the book along with signed application affirming that the book is the author's first published historical work
- Books must contain substantial information on Kansas history
- Books must have been published during the previous two calendar years
