Michael Baughn received a degree in criminal justice from Colby Community College; a bachelor’s degree in history and secondary education from Asbury College, Wilmore, Kentucky; and a master’s degree in educational administration and secondary education from Fort Hays State University.
He served as the mayor of Brewster, county commissioner, and as undersheriff and sheriff of Thomas County.
Baughn has been involved in numerous historical organizations. He served as a board member of the Thomas County Community Foundation. He is a past president of the Butterfield Trail Association, High Plains Historical Association, Northwestern Plains American Revolution Bicentennial Park Association, and Thomas County Historical Society. He served as treasurer of Thomas County Centennial Commission. He has been a member of the Kansas Corral of the Westerners, Larned Old Guard, Fort Wallace Memorial Association, and Western History Association.
He served as president of Brewster Development, Inc., district governor of Lions Club International, secretary of the Thomas County Economic Development Alliance, and was a Republican precinct committeeman. He also served on the boards of Genesis Thomas County, Inc., and Big Brothers-big Sisters of Thomas County.
Baughn was first elected to the Kansas Historical Foundation board of directors in 1994. He is interested in western Kansas settlement and the history and culture of the Cheyenne people.
