Shelley Hickman Clark earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Kansas in 1971, and a juris doctorate in 1976. She was admitted to the Kansas Bar in 1976.
Hickman Clark clerked for the Honorable Arthur J. Stanley, Jr., and the Honorable Richard D. Rogers, United States District Court, District of Kansas. She served as pardon and extradition attorney for Governor John Carlin and as hearing officer for the Kansas Corporation Commission before entering private practice in 1985.
She joined the University of Kansas Law School in 1990. She was a supervising attorney in the Douglas County Legal Aid Clinical Program, and became director in 1995. She is an expert in historic preservation law. Clark was appointed associate dean and director of clinical programs in 1999. She returned to the Legal Aid Clinic in 2002.
An outstanding teacher, she won the 1999 Immel Award for teaching excellence. She is a member of the Douglas County Bar Association, Kansas Bar Association, Douglas County Historical Society, and the Lawrence Preservation Alliance Board. She serves as vice president of the Historic Mount Oread Fund and on the board of the Kansas Legal Services. She is chair of the Douglas County Heritage Conservation Council.
Hickman Clark was first elected to the Kansas Historical Foundation Board of Directors in 2002. She has served on the Edgar Langsdorf Award Committee and Landon Tihen Award Committee.
